Elections

Union membership has declined over the years. Today, only 6.4% of employees who work in the private sector are members of a labor union. Contributing to the declining numbers are elections when employees decide that they no longer wish to be represented by a union. That means today, more than ever, unions (including the NNU) need to organize more employees to join as members and pay dues each month.

Since January 1, 2012 to October 2016 the NNU has been involved in 11 decertification elections where employees decided if they still wished to have the union as their collective bargaining representative. When considering the facts about unions and making any decision, we hope that you will consider why employees at other hospitals have sought to remove the union.

Most recently, in St. Louis County, nurses at Des Peres Hospital voted in November 2016 to “decertify” the NNU/NNOC. That means the only hospital in the great St. Louis metropolitan area with the NNOC union is SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Considering the number of hospitals in this area, that’s an important fact about this union.
