Employee Experience

An Exceptional Employee Experience

At SSM Health, we value all of our exceptional employees and the incredible work they do on behalf of those we serve. We know that employees are vital to our ability to carry out our Mission of providing exceptional patient care and service. That is why we have a number of programs in place to reward and recognize our employees for their contributions, while providing an environment where employees can do their best work. This includes providing strong market-based compensation and benefits, and ongoing career development opportunities, while also ensuring employees have a voice at work. Ultimately, we are committed to providing good jobs with great futures.

A Sacred Calling

We believe that health care is more than a career. It is a calling. At SSM Health, our employees are able to follow their calling in a Mission driven organization, where every person is connected to our Mission and our more than 145-year heritage of healing.

Employee Recognition and Career Development

SSM Health respects all our employees and the important role each person plays in our ministry. We believe that every individual is a leader and encourage employees to use their gifts and talents to reach their full potential and ensure we are providing the best care possible.

With numerous education and development programs, each employee can chart a personal path for career growth and fulfilment. This includes MHA, MSN, and MBA cohort programs, as well as RN to BSN programs, tuition discounts at a number of universities, and tuition reimbursement.

We also foster an atmosphere of recognition. Employees are recognized regularly for clinical excellence (DAISY Award, Great Catch Award, Hester Davis Nursing Awards, Nursing Symposium Awards), Innovation (Innovators Award), living our Mission (Mission in Motion, Mission Excellence) and exceptional performance and service (milestone years of service, retirement recognition programs, etc.).

Providing Employees with a Voice at SSM Health

At SSM Health, we need and value the opinions and feedback of our employees, which is why we work hard to foster a culture of open communication. Our employee engagement survey is one of the many ways for you to share your opinions and feedback with management. Our “Always Safe” program empowers employees to “speak up if they are unsure” and “stop the line if they are uncomfortable.” In addition, each year we ask all clinical staff who provide direct patient care to take the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Culture Survey, which measures staff perception around our culture of patient safety and how well we’re providing a safe environment for our patients, families and other customers. We also provide several ways for employees to report events, complaints or grievances about ethical acts or patient privacy issues.

We have always encouraged employees to speak with a supervisor, a representative from Human Resources or anyone else in leadership at SSM Health if they have a question, concern or problem with any aspect of their work experience at SSM Health.  Employees also have the opportunity to file a grievance if they have an issue related to the application or violation of SSM Health policy or established practice.

Just Culture

SSM Health is committed to providing safe high-quality patient care. We also believe it is our responsibility to put systems in place that protect patients and our employees from human error. That is why we have a Just Culture, which places significant focus on risk, system design and behavioral choices. We strongly encourage employees at all levels to openly report patient care events, near-misses, and any concerns they have so that we can investigate and make necessary changes.
