What is a Union?

A labor union is a business. Unions represent employees in negotiations and dealings with their employer over wages, benefits and other working conditions. When a labor union is selected in an election, the labor union wins the right to “ask” for things in bargaining with the employer. However, the labor union cannot guarantee it will achieve the things that it promised to employees. Labor unions are a third party in the employment setting. A labor union can be an obstacle between an employee and their leader in the workplace. In either a Right-to-Work state or a Non-Right-to-Work state, a labor union is an organization that charges its “members” dues. For an explanation of Right-to-Work, click here.
